Collagen is the most abundant structural protein in the body and the primary protein in connective tissues including tendons, ligaments, joint capsules, and the fascia that surrounds and connects muscles. Flexibility is partly limited by the extensibility of these connective tissues, making collagen synthesis a relevant nutritional target for yoga practitioners. Collagen synthesis requires several key nutritional cofactors: vitamin C (essential for the hydroxylation of proline and lysine residues during collagen assembly), glycine (the primary amino acid in collagen), proline, and hydroxyproline. A 2019 randomized trial published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that consuming 15 grams of gelatin (a collagen precursor) along with vitamin C significantly increased blood markers of collagen synthesis when taken before exercise.

Anti-inflammatory foods support flexibility by reducing chronic inflammation in joint tissues and connective tissues that can limit range of motion. Chronic low-grade inflammation stiffens joints, thickens connective tissue, and impairs the lubrication of joint surfaces. Magnesium is the 'relaxation mineral' that plays a critical role in muscle function, and its relevance to flexibility is underappreciated. Magnesium is required for the ATPase reaction that allows muscle fibers to release and relax following contraction. Magnesium deficiency is associated with increased muscle tension, cramps, spasms, and difficulty achieving full muscular relaxation during stretching. Research published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that magnesium supplementation reduced the frequency of muscle cramps and improved subjective measures of muscle relaxation.
